World number one: “I stole a few strokes on the holes”

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler lived up to expectations during the first round of The Masters and accounted for the only completed bogey-free round so far. Scheffler went around on 66 shots (-6) and made birdies on three of four short holes at Augusta National, despite the tricky winds that prevailed during the first round.

– It becomes a guessing game quite often and it is impossible to get it right all the time. It’s regarding executing the strokes and then accepting and I feel like I stole a few strokes on the holes today, Scheffler said.

He has only one player ahead of him, Bryson DeChambeau who went early in the field and managed to record 65 strokes (-7). A roundregarding that Scheffler drew attention to.

– I saw that he went seven under and thought that it must have been a really good round. But when I play myself, I don’t think too much regarding results, it’s the first day and you want to get into the right mood with good patience and hit good shots. I think we managed well all day although I had to clear up some situations with good close-range shots.

Scheffler played with Northern Irish world number two Rory McIlroy, who came in at 71 strokes (-1). McIlroy was impressed with Scheffler’s handling of Augusta National in the tough conditions.

– Scottie is so efficient and it doesn’t feel like he is six under par. He is the best in the world right now and it is perfect for me to play with him. Winning majors is often regarding minimizing mistakes and Scottie does it impressively.

Play on the first day at Augusta National was postponed in the morning and suspended as darkness fell in the evening with many players still out on the course. Among them, Swedish debutant Ludvig Åberg, who, like Scheffler, is bogey-free following eleven holes played. Åberg has made two birdies and nine pars during his first career major round. It is currently enough for a shared ninth place.
