Blizzard Deploys Massive Server Infrastructure for Launch
Blizzard deployed a massive server infrastructure to handle the enormous influx of players without traditional regional fracturing.
Blizzard Entertainment disclosed that the launch was backed by 3,924 virtual machines, 70,480 CPU cores, and 251,136 GB of memory. This technical setup allowed players to bypass traditional server selection screens by choosing broad rulesets—such as Normal, PvP, or RP—and populating expansive mega servers.

KitGuru highlighted that the gamble largely paid off by avoiding the severe queues and login instability that typically plague major MMO releases.
Scheduled maintenance on November 5 addressed early technical hurdles, including layering problems and transport glitches where boats and zeppelins occasionally disappeared, as the Economic Times noted (The Economic Times reported).
Developers quickly deployed temporary portals to keep transit moving while fixing the issues.
Long day but great day today! A few things to catch folks up on: 1. Transports – we had some issues with the service that manages transports like boats and zeppelins. As a temp fix we spawned some portals to get us through the night. We’ll have a proper fix in the morning and…
Character creation options expanded beyond the traditional limits to include unusual combinations such as Undead Paladins, Dwarf Shamans, Gnome Priests, Human Hunters, Orc Mages, and Troll Warlocks. Beginners starting their journey were advised to pick classes based on personal interest rather than strict internet optimization guides, while utilizing gamepad controls currently operating in a beta state alongside traditional keyboard inputs.
From Season of Discovery to a Permanent Home
Senior game designer Josh Greenfield explained in an interview with Bloomberg featured by IGN that developers had discussed a permanent version of the game before Classic launched in 2019 (IGN reported).
"This launch was crazier than the insanity we imagined, but thankfully the team built plans and contingencies." World of Warcraft: Forever has officially gone live, as players (and developers) seem pleasantly surprised by the MMORPG's launch.https://t.co/j0NXbrdoS4
The turning point arrived with the 2023 release of Season of Discovery. It experimented with ability gems and converted old dungeons into full raids.
Greenfield noted that community response to those experiments drove leadership to greenlight Forever.
The development team is adopting a narrative approach comparable to serialized television rather than pushing forward into new expansions. VICE interviewed design leads who likened the project to expanding a favorite novel into a detailed mini-series (VICE reported).

Principal game designer Kris Zierhut explained that the team is slowing down the timeline within a narrative bubble, comparing the philosophy to Star Wars projects like The Clone Wars. Senior game designer Josh Greenfield also discussed this focus.
Lead Classic designer Tim Jones pointed out that environments like Northrend and Outland technically exist within this timeline framework as hostile, high-level territories rather than active expansion continents.
Now we finally get to play the game! Congrats @Warcraft on the launch and we’ll see you in Azeroth. pic.twitter.com/KSVT8mByka
