This nearly 3-hour movie mainly tells the story of how a group of physicists led by Oppenheimer created the atomic bomb. It is relatively realistic, with no thrilling plot or dramatic changes, and it is also very long. But the movie has continued to attract public attention since its release. “Oppenheimer” grossed approximately US$958 million at the global box office, becoming the highest-grossing biographical film in film history.
It’s a bit strange. Nowadays, the amount of information is exploding, people like fast and exciting, and everything must be spicy and fast to be satisfied. How come such a lengthy and bland biopic goes against the current? Moreover, it is really rare that the increasingly “awakened” Academy Awards were awarded to it.
Oppenheimer was an outstanding theoretical physicist and a genius in personnel organization, but his greatest impact on mankind was leading a group of scientists and soldiers to develop the atomic bomb that ended World War II. Supposedly, this kind of person is a national treasure, but after the war, he was investigated again and again by the US government, and his security clearance was revoked because he was suspected of being a communist. The entire movie, from beginning to end, is woven through the U.S. government’s hearings, lawyer’s defenses, and witness statements, casting a shadow over Oppenheimer’s life.
Oppenheimer was more left-leaning in his early years and also participated in some activities of the Communist Party of the United States. His ex-girlfriend, wife, brother and sister-in-law had all joined the Communist Party of the United States. However, although he had read Marx’s “Das Kapital”, he refused to join the Communist Party of the United States. In fact, in the 1920s and 1930s, many scientists and students were very left-wing. They are obsessed with Marx’s theories. Because Marx’s theory seemed high-sounding and very deceptive on the surface; and because Lenin actually succeeded in overthrowing the Czar and establishing the Soviet Union as a communist country in Russia, left-leaning people in the West thought it was paradise on earth. At that time, they did not know the cruelty of Soviet Russia and its control and killing of people; and the United States was also relatively free in ideology, and it would not stop you from whatever doctrine you wanted to believe.
However, as he grew older, Oppenheimer was no longer interested in communism, and his wife quit the party. Although the U.S. government knew about his past, it still invited him to participate in the highly secret “Manhattan Project” and be responsible for the scientist’s affairs. Unfortunately, a certain scientist in this group was a Soviet spy and sold American atomic bomb technology to the Soviet Union, but this was not Oppenheimer’s fault. After World War II, especially when the Soviet Union took over Eastern Europe, and the CCP occupied mainland China with the support of the Soviet Union, the U.S. government did not expect that communism would take over half of the country after World War II. After learning from the painful experience, they began to arrest communists in the government. Oppenheimer, who was originally a national treasure, was also suspected by them and became the focus of their investigation. In addition, the big tree attracts wind, and some officials and scientists have personal grudges with Oppenheimer. Therefore, Oppenheimer was repeatedly investigated, his security clearance was revoked, and he was not allowed to have access to secrets. Now it seems that he was overly punished.
But while being made things difficult, Oppenheimer was also very guilty of making the atomic bomb. He always felt that he had the blood of the victims on his hands, so much so that the then US President Truman sarcastically handed him his handkerchief and asked him to wipe his hands. I think Oppenheimer never wanted to kill people, he was just a tool. The United States was researching atomic bombs because it was afraid that the Germans would seize the opportunity and destroy the world by creating such a super-high-level weapon first. Later, the United States built the atomic bomb, but Hitler committed suicide and Germany was defeated. So the United States decided to use atomic bombs against Japan, which refused to surrender. Before launching the atomic bomb, the United States negotiated with the Japanese government and asked them to surrender to avoid civilian casualties, but Japan’s emperor, government and military rulers refused to surrender. American pilots have repeatedly dropped leaflets asking civilians to take shelter, but many people did not listen. So why did Oppenheimer blame himself to death? He doesn’t decide anything.
