Yan Diomande is making an increasingly strong case for a regular place in Real Madrid’s attack under manager Jose Mourinho, registering four goals and four assists across his last six appearances since returning from international duty. The 19-year-old’s rise, capped by a brilliant strike in a 3-0 victory against Racing Santander at El Sardinero, has drawn praise from former manager Jorge Valdano while creating intense competition that threatens Vinicius Jr.’s traditional starting role.
Diomande Claims His Place in Mourinho’s Squad
The Ivorian forward has capitalized on every available minute on the pitch. Following an impressive display that helped secure a 3-0 win over Racing Santander, Diomande’s recent productivity includes four goals and four assists across his last six appearances. This run follows closely on the heels of Real Madrid’s statement victory against Barcelona in El Clasico.

Jorge Valdano, speaking on Movistar and cited by MARCA, observed a stark transformation in the teenager’s demeanor and output since the start of the campaign. He’s been gaining confidence; he looked a bit shy in the first few matches,
Valdano noted.
The Pressure Mounts for Vinicius Jr.
While the emergence of a clinical young forward provides tactical depth for Mourinho, it complicates the squad dynamics for established names. Vinicius Jr. faces an uphill battle to regain an unassailable spot in the lineup, currently disrupted by domestic suspension and the scintillating form of his teammates.
These matches are bad news for Vinicius, who will have to reclaim the place that his teammates have now taken from him,
Valdano warned regarding the Brazilian’s current standing.
Mourinho has carefully managed expectations regarding his forward options. Addressing the press ahead of the Racing fixture, the Portuguese coach acknowledged his reliance on the Brazilian while refusing to hand out guarantees. I care a lot about Vinicius, I need him, but I’m not saying he’ll start,
Mourinho stated.
Upcoming Fixtures and Squad Rotation
Vinicius is anticipated to feature in the starting XI for Wednesday’s upcoming UEFA Champions League fixture against AEK Athens. However, he must subsequently serve the final match of his domestic suspension against Valencia.
Once that suspension concludes, the Brazilian will become available again in La Liga following the international break, when Real Madrid face Celta. Until then, Diomande remains positioned to dictate the pace of Madrid’s attacking ambitions.
