Yangwang U9 Xtreme reaches 312.66 mph to become fastest production car

The Yangwang U9 Xtreme has established a new benchmark for production automotive performance, reaching a verified speed of 503.17 km/h (312.66 mph) on a public highway in Abu Dhabi on November 1. This feat confirms the electric hypercar as the fastest production vehicle globally, verified by the FIA and Guinness World Records.

While the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 captured global attention in April 2005 by exceeding 400 km/h with a quad-turbo W16 engine, the U9 Xtreme utilizes a 1,200-volt electric architecture to generate over 3,000 horsepower.

Strategic Implications of the 1,200-Volt Architecture

  • Technical Superiority: The U9 Xtreme is the first production vehicle to implement a 1,200-volt system, compared with the 800-volt architectures found in other high-end electric vehicles.
  • Production Constraints: With a cap of 30 units, the vehicle functions more as a showcase of engineering capability rather than a mass-market volume driver.
  • Infrastructure Gap: The vehicle’s charging requirements currently outpace existing public infrastructure, as the 1,200V platform lacks widespread fast-charging support, limiting the utility of its 80kWh LFP battery system.

The transition from the 496 km/h test track run in September 2025 to the 503.17 km/h public road record on November 1 shows the pace of development. German racing driver Mark Basseng, who won the GT1 class world championship in 2012 driving a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3, was behind the wheel for the record run. The car integrates four electric motors—each outputting 755 horsepower—to achieve a power-to-weight ratio of 1,217 horsepower per ton. Despite a vehicle weight of approximately 2,500 kg, the use of active suspension (DiSus-X) and individual wheel torque adjustment allowed for the necessary stability at speeds exceeding 300 mph.

But the balance sheet tells a different story regarding commercial viability. While the standard Yangwang U9 is priced at $252,630 in China—the only figure confirmed by Yangwang directly—industry estimates place the Xtreme between $400,000 and $700,000. This price point places the vehicle in direct competition with ultra-luxury marques.

The risk profile shows that during pre-record testing, a U9 Xtreme crashed into a barrier at a reported 360 km/h (over 220 mph). While the passenger cell appeared to have remained intact, the incident highlights the extreme mechanical stress placed on bespoke components, such as the Giti Tire semi-slicks and the rim-surface treatments required to prevent wheel slippage under immense torque.
