If Yann Moix’s documentary ended up focusing on actor Gérard Depardieu, this was not the initial project. The director had already visited North Korea in 2018 to make a documentary on the country. After meeting a producer, Anthony Dufour, Yann Moix decides to continue the investigation by focusing on his friend Phillipe-Maurice de Broglie. The latter’s father being a former French marshal who had met the founder of the North Korean regime, the idea was to trace the traces of this family story.

However, to try to obtain a visa, Yann Moix decided to found an association for the friendship of Franco-Korean letters and to bring together various personalities potentially attractive to the North Korean regime.
The investigation by Le Monde magazine revealed that the production would have initially relied on Jean-Claude Vandamme. This one, who would be very appreciated by Kim Jong-Un, however denied this information by declaring that he had never been contacted by the production. Indeed, Yann Moix declared on France Inter that he then went to Gérard Depardieu by offering him a biopic as a pretext: “I said: Gérard, would you like to go to South Korea? North ?’ He opened his notebook and said: What date?” The director then claims that he filmed it without much authorization since he was making a documentary: ““I had the idea to film Gérard, it was actually tacitly that I did it. I didn’t ask him for permission because I was going to finish a documentary there. He didn’t say yes nor no, I filmed, he said nothing”.

On returning to France, there is disillusionment, the documentary does nothing. An editor made a 2h30 version of it which will never be released and will remain on the producers’ hard drives. The only images revealed will be those from the Additional Investigation. The journalist of the investigation, having watched the entire documentary, also affirms that this was perhaps preferable.
