One person’s joy is another’s sorrow! Two new YB strikers are currently experiencing this old wisdom. While Ebrima Colley celebrates, Silvère Ganvoula is devastated. But one after anonther.
In July, the Congolese Silvère Ganvoula moved to YB on a free transfer; his contract with Bundesliga club VfL Bochum had expired. He has scored one goal in his first eight appearances for the Bernese team. That’s enough to make it back to the Congo national team after a break of almost 1.5 years.
Ganvoula will also be in the starting line-up in the final game of qualifying for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations. The 27-year-old even scored a 2-0 lead against Gambia with a penalty shot shortly before half-time. With a win the qualification would have been perfect.
But after the break the Gambians turned up the heat. After 79 minutes, Yankuba Minteh made it 1:2. The striker came on as a substitute for Ebrima Colley, whom YB borrowed from Atalanta Bergamo shortly before the transfer deadline.
And after 90 minutes things get even better for Gambia – or even worse for Congo: Mohamed Badosi even scores the 2-2, he came on for ex-FCZ striker Assan Ceesay.
This point is enough for Gambia to qualify for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. Ebrima Colley is happy about Instagram, just like Saidy Janko. The YB full-back has been playing for Gambia since 2021, but was not in the squad for the game against Congo.
For the Congolese, the dream of the Africa Cup is over, and Silvere Ganvoula is correspondingly disappointed on Instagram.
The next chance for a moment of success comes on Friday, when the striker with YB meets Xamax in the cup.
For the champions from Bern, qualifying for the Africa Cup is a double-edged sword. The tournament takes place in mid-January 2024 and lasts around a month.
