[Newtalk新聞] US President Joe Biden earlier signed an executive order allowing the United States to impose sanctions on Israelis involved in violent attacks on Palestinian residents, including Israeli politicians and government officials who may be involved.
The emerging American media “Axios” reported that Biden’s executive order, which breaks with convention, is the strongest measure taken by any previous U.S. government against Israelis who commit violence against Palestinian civilians.
According to statistics from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), residents of Israeli settlements have launched nearly 500 attacks on Palestinians since the Israel-Kazakhstan conflict broke out on October 7 last year (2023). At least eight Palestinians were killed, including a child, and more than 115 others were injured.
The Biden administration has expressed concerns to the Israeli authorities through private channels and in public. At the end of November last year, Biden asked the Secretary of State and the Secretary of the Treasury to prepare to impose sanctions on Israeli perpetrators; the White House, the U.S. State Department, and the Treasury Department have been quietly formulating the executive order over the past few weeks.
The U.S. State Department has recently drafted a new executive order that would allow the U.S. government to sanction any Israeli who “directs, formulates, implements and executes, or fails to execute, policies that threaten the peace, security, and stability of the West Bank.”
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on the 1st of this month that “Israel must take more steps to stop violence against civilians in the West Bank and hold perpetrators accountable” and “the United States will continue to take actions to advance U.S. foreign policy.” goals, including the viability of a two-state solution and a commitment to the safety, security and dignity of Israelis and Palestinians.”
The report pointed out that the US government had considered adding Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to the sanctions list.
Biden signed the executive order while traveling to Michigan, the state with the largest Arab population. Arab-American voters are angry about Biden’s Gaza war policies, which could jeopardize his bid for votes in several key battleground states.
Multiple polls show Biden lagging behind Trump, who is preparing for a comeback. Important vote sources of the Democratic Party, such as young voters and ethnic minorities, are dissatisfied with Biden’s handling of the Israel-Kazakhstan war and believe that he favors Israel.
