YouTube will force you to watch 30 seconds of advertisements (advertisements) in its app for smart TVs. The revelation was made during the YouTube Brandcast event last Wednesday (17), where it was said that the YouTube app for smart TVs will not have the option to skip the ad for thirty seconds (if you don’t subscribe to YouTube Premium).
According to YouTube, instead of users watching two consecutive 15-second ads, they will see a single 30-second ad. The company says advertisers can insert their 30-second ads through YouTube Select, an platform that targets 5% of YouTube’s featured content. According to the company, 70% of YouTube Select impressions come from TVs.
During the Brandcast event, Variety noted that Neal Mohan, CEO of YouTube, stated that:
More and more viewers are tuning into YouTube on the biggest screen in their home.
Viewers – especially younger ones – no longer make a distinction between the type of content they are watching.
Ads may appear when the user pauses the video
YouTube said it will start testing showing ads the moment a user pauses the video when watching it on a smart TV. This feature is similar to the ad feature launched by Hulu a few years ago, the “pause experiences”. It looks like YouTube ads will appear in banner format around the video and can be removed by selecting the “dismiss” button.
Launch and availability
It wasn’t mentioned when changes related to YouTube ads for smart TVs will go live for the general public.
