Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he invited German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to visit Kyiv next Monday.
Zelensky said via a video link at an event hosted by Chatham House Institute of International Affairs in London that Schultz could take a “very big political step” and come to the Ukrainian capital.
He said the invitation was made some time ago. On the same day, Russia will hold a military parade, traditionally celebrating the victory of the Soviet army over Nazi Germany.
On Thursday, the German government announced that Foreign Minister Annalena Birbock would travel to Kyiv first, but without revealing further details.
Relations between Kyiv and Berlin soured, after German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier was told not to bother coming to Kyiv in mid-April.
