Since 2021, the entire Brussels region has moved to zone 30, with a few exceptions. Last year, 222,000 reports were drawn up in these areas. It must be said that motorists are not always very fans of this limitation, which some consider too low.
“It’s really slow“, a driver confided to us. “But it’s true that there are a lot of bicycles, pedestrians, scooters… We have to put a limit somewhere and they placed it at 30, that’s it.“
But some residents are, on the contrary, delighted to see radars installed in their streets. “This is a good thing. A week after the lidar is gone, you can be sure that the situation (cars driving too fast, editor’s note) will start again“, says a local resident.
Last year, these fines raised 17 million euros. A sum which is partly sent to the state coffers while another part is sent to the fund for road safety. “There is a direct link between the number of deaths in a territory and the money received from road safety. The fewer people killed, the more money they will receive“, explains Benoit Godart, spokesperson for VIAS, the road safety institute. “It’s a virtuous circle and this money is then reinvested in road safety. In other words, the person who gets flashed today finances the road safety actions of tomorrow.”
The goal of this huge Zone 30 in the region was to ensure the safety of pedestrians and bicycles. Today, one in three fatal accidents involves them.
