At a cabinet meeting held the day after the North Korean drone invasion, President Yoon Seok-yeol issued an ‘open warning’ to the military.

The President’s office put forward a ‘principle theory’ that President Yoon would make a comprehensive judgment when the results of the military investigation were released, but there is a dilemma that has no choice but to be cautious.
First of all, there is a perception that the hardening of the military leadership and the creation of a ‘command vacuum’ is what North Korea wants most.
There is not only the risk of being used adversely for additional provocations, but also the burden of holding responsibility for every future threat or accident.
Second, due to the nature of the military organization, where innovation such as sabotage is difficult due to promotion according to rank, there are limited successors, and there is anxiety that the leadership of the political situation may be taken away during the hearing.
The current atmosphere in the presidential office is that the priority is to correct the paternalism and lax discipline of the military organization rather than a political engineering change that changes the signboard right away.
Lastly, President Yoon’s style that there is no ‘personnel for changing the situation’ and that the responsible person should be asked hard also plays a role.
If a one-point personnel reshuffling of the military leadership is carried out, concerns about fairness with Minister Lee Sang-min of the Ministry of Public Administration and Security related to the Itaewon disaster cannot be ruled out.
The presidential office previously defined the North Korean drone incident as “soft terrorism for political and social disruption.”
It shows a sense of vigilance not to get caught up in provocations aimed at causing South-South conflicts from the beginning of the second year of power.
