13 Arrested in Johor Over Molotov Cocktail Attack on Rohingya Settlement

“We will not tolerate any crime that threatens Johor’s peace and harmony, and we will investigate everyone fairly and transparently, regardless of their status,” Johor police chief Comm Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad stated following a sweeping crackdown on a suspected firebombing.

Thirteen local men, ranging in age from 16 to 31, have been arrested by police in connection with an early morning Molotov cocktail attack targeting several homes at a Rohingya settlement in Kulai Besar, Kulai, Malay Mail reported. The arson incident, which occurred at approximately 1.30am on October 13, ignited perimeter fences but was swiftly extinguished, leaving no injuries or structural damage reported.

The Arrests and Remand Orders in Johor

Personnel from the Johor Contingent Police Headquarters Criminal Investigation Department and the Kulai District Police Headquarters executed the arrests during an operation spanning from October 14 through October 19. Background checks revealed that four of the detained suspects carry a combined total of 12 prior criminal and drug-related offenses. Authorities also confiscated 13 mobile phones, three sets of clothing, and three baseball caps during the raids.

The Magistrate’s Court granted multiple remand orders to facilitate the ongoing investigations. Four suspects were detained for an initial eight days starting October 14, another four for a week, one for five days beginning October 15, and the final four for a week starting October 19.

Viral Videos and Provocative Social Media Tensions

Investigators are examining whether the attack was retaliation for two inflammatory Facebook videos circulating prior to the incident. The footage depicted a group of individuals, identified in reports as Rohingya youths, issuing street challenges in the Kulai area and berating the local Malay community as cowards who lacked the courage to enter the settlement.

Amid the digital escalation, a Rohingya man in his 30s filed a separate police report denying any involvement in the viral content. He asserted that unidentified parties had misappropriated his photograph without consent to manufacture the provocative clips. Police confirmed they received formal complaints regarding both the arson and the viral videos.

Legal Statutes and Ongoing Police Inquiries

Johor police have opened two formal investigation papers into the incident. The case is being investigated under Section 436 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire or explosive substances with intent to destroy a house. Authorities are also probing the suspects under Sections 505(b) and 505(c) of the Penal Code for statements that may cause public fear, alarm, or racial incitement, alongside Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the improper use of network facilities.

Law enforcement officials have urged anyone possessing relevant information to come forward. Anyone with information can contact the nearest police station, the Johor police hotline at 019-2792095, or the Johor police contingent headquarters operations room at 07-2212999.
