14 dead and 73 injured in collision between two buses

At least fourteen people were killed and 73 injured in a collision between two buses on Thursday in Yamoussoukro, in central Côte d’Ivoire, the emergency services said.

For a reason that has not been specified, the collision occurred at the southern exit of the Ivorian capital Yamoussoukro, towards Abidjan.

The report communicated by the Group of military firefighters of Côte d’Ivoire (GSPM) is fourteen dead – nine men and five women – and seventy-three wounded evacuated to hospitals in Yamoussoukro.

Road accidents are very numerous and most often deadly in Côte d’Ivoire, where many vehicles are poorly maintained and several roads are in poor condition.

Accidents are also due to driving errors, many motorists being holders of licenses bought from corrupt inspectors, without having ever attended a driving school.

On August 1, thirty-seven people were killed and thirteen others injured in two road accidents near Abidjan and Yamoussoukro.

There are more than 12,000 traffic accidents per year in Côte d’Ivoire, which constitute the first cause of death among children and young people aged 5 to 29, according to the Ministry of Transport, which specifies that the average rate of road deaths is 24 per thousand inhabitants.
