Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is expected to announce his candidacy for the 2024 US presidential election this week. See Guillaume Lavoie’s analysis.

“I don’t know if he’s the most credible candidate, but he’s certainly the one who would have the best chances compared to the others,” said Guillaume Lavoie, associate member of the Raoul-Dandurand Chair.
According to polls of voting intentions mentioned by the expert, Trump is between 40 and 50%, and DeSantis arrives between 18 and 22%.
“He is relatively young compared to the other opponents. He is 44 years old, he graduated from Yale and Harvard. He entered the army. Afterwards, he married a well-known news anchor in Florida. He became a congressman and from then on he founded the freedom caucus, a very right-wing republican. In an unlikely race, he won the Republican nomination with Trump’s key endorsement to run for governor. He won by a hair. Then he won re-election by a bumper margin as Republicans lost all over the place. He is truly a rising star. Since he came to power, we could qualify his governance by Trump without the drama or the drama with very hard lines, ”describes the specialist in American politics.
How would the Trump camp react to the announcement of DeSantis’ candidacy?
“Trump is very upset because he takes credit for DeSantis being elected gubernatorial. (…) Before, he was one of Trump’s best friends in his campaign. (…) For the Trump camp, there is almost an aspect of betrayal. (…) I imagine that the attacks will be very hard”, predicts Mr. Lavoie.
