21-Year-Old Student Succumbs to Avian Influenza A(H5N1) in Khanh Hoa, Vietnam: Latest Updates and Information

Au Vietnama 21-year-old student from the province of Khanh Hoain south-central Vietnam, succumbed to avian influenza A(H5N1) on March 23, 2024.

The patient developed symptoms such as fever and mild cough after returning home in Tan Ninh village, Ninh Trung commune, ville de Ninh Hoa, Khanh Hoa province, on March 11, 2024. He took over-the-counter medicine and consulted at Ninh Hoa Medical Center on March 16 and 17, 2024, but the symptoms did not disappear. On March 17, 2024, his family rushed him to Khanh Hoa General Hospital as his health condition was worsening. On March 19, 2024, the Khanh Hoa Disease Control Center took samples from the patient for analysis. According to the results on March 20, 2024, the patient was positive for influenza A/H5, and the confirmation results of the Pasteur Institute in Nha Trang on March 22, 2024 determined that the patient was positive for influenza A( H5N1). As his health continued to deteriorate, he was transferred to Khanh Hoa Tropical Disease Hospital for quarantine and treatment. It was in this hospital that he died on March 23, 2024.

The deceased patient was studying at the University of Nha Trang and stayed in the school dormitory in the eponymous town.

According to the results of the epidemiological investigation, before and after the Lunar New Year 2024, the patient went to trap wild birds near his place of residence. There were no sick or dead poultry around the area where the patient’s family lived. Cases of close contact with patients are recorded and their health is monitored daily. To date, no new cases have been detected

In total, 89 people in contact with the patient are subject to medical monitoring. They include 3 family members, 6 roommates and 60 students, 14 medical staff from the Provincial General Hospital and 6 medical staff from the Tropical Disease Hospital. To date, no new cases have been detected.

In Vietnam, according to information from the Animal Health Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, outbreaks of avian flu are still sporadically recorded in poultry farms in many localities in the country. Since the beginning of 2024, six outbreaks of bird flu have been recorded in six provinces and cities, including Bac Ninh, Ninh Binh, Khanh Hoa, Ba Ria – Vung Tau, Long An and Tien Giang.

From 2003 to present, 128 people have been infected with influenza A/H5N1 throughout Vietnam, of whom 65 have died (50.8%).
