3 years after its reopening, the Bateau Ivre is at a turning point in its history. In order to continue the adventure, SCIC Ohé, which bought the cultural hall and manages it, is relaunching a large subscription to increase its number of members and recover funds.

With around 2000 members today, the cooperative society which manages the Bateau Ivre is a success in its own right. Its members affirm it loud and clear, it is even the largest cultural cooperative society in France. The adventure launched in 2010 has already seen some wonderful chapters and some more delicate ones too. On the positive side there is of course the purchase of the room and its reopening. On the less positive side there is the difficulty of making this room live while being profitable.

The members of the board of directors of Bateau Ivre do not hide it, evoking “a complicated financial situation”, due in particular to the difficulties linked to Covid. As a reminder, the room had to close its doors in March 2020 after only 11 days of opening. It did not subsequently reopen until September 2021. Enough to weigh down finances from its launch, with the contraction of a loan necessary at the time. Despite everything since then, the Bateau Ivre operates with a rich program of at least 4 evenings per week, thanks in particular to the 300 volunteers involved. What to say to Franck Mouget, the coordinator of Bateau Ivre : “We have succeeded in reintroducing the place into the cultural and artistic landscape” which puts forward a figure of850 artistic teams welcomed and 58,000 spectators in 2 and a half years.

Kévin Turpeau, one of the administrators explains that “the Boat is self-financing on a daily basis, but not enough for the artistic side, the technicians… We therefore need to find a little oxygen, hence the new subscription”. With an artistic budget of 300,000 euros per year, the Bateau Ivre is today a liner that must be successfully maneuvered.

The team nevertheless wants to be positive because “the tool is now complete” they explain, referring to the opening of the balcony this fall, which allows the room to have a capacity of 500 people. Enough to program bigger artists than with just the bottom pit but also to rethink the project a little.

“(Re)take a part of the Boat”

“We are ambitious but not dogmatic” thus specifies Thierry Bouvet, president of SCIC Ohé. “The first two years we did exploration to oil our practices and our organization, we are today refining the project with this experience. Le Bateau Ivre is a living project that is constantly evolving. » Among the changes, let us point out a more traditional ticketing but “at an affordable price”, as well as revised rental prices.

Money remains the sinews of war and the Bateau Ivre therefore seeks to give itself some breathing room. For this, a new subscription “(Re)take a share of Boat” to buy shares (the price of the share is €100 for an individual, 400 euros for a legal entity) of the cooperative has just been launched. It will last two months until February 14. The announced objective is to double the number of members, reaching 4,000 people and hoping to raise 300,000 euros in order to pay off debts and get back afloat.
