40 years of the Mac: the memories of Rich Siegel, creator of BBEdit

What would the Mac be without quality applications? On the 40th anniversary of Apple’s revolutionary computer, we’re taking a trip back in time with third-party developers who helped bring it to life. Here are the memories of Rich Siegel, founder and CEO of Bare Bones Software, who notably designs BBEdit since 1993.

Do you remember the launch of the Macintosh in 1984?

I remember it very well. I remember it all the more because it was unlike any other computer I had seen in the past. It was so exciting and intriguing that we delayed our plans to buy a home computer until we could see a Mac in person.

What was your first Mac?

It was a Mac 512Ka “Fat Mac”, purchased as a bundle with an external floppy drive and an ImageWriter printer.

How did you come to use a Mac? Had you used other computers before?

My first encounter with the Mac was when we brought one home. The unboxing experience was remarkable (and the packaging of today’s Macs continues that tradition) and the setup was easy as pie. All I had to do was plug it in and turn it on.

Before that, I had already used microcomputers, mainly the Apple II, as well as the Commodore PET and a bit of IBM PCs. But I mainly used mini computers : PRIME, HP and VAX. The Mac was something completely new.

BBEdit 8.0, released in 2004.

When you created BBEdit in 1993, did you expect to still be working on it 31 years later?
