After the formalization of the new PlayStation Plus in March, Sony is now putting the cover back with the first games available in the brand new offer! Enough to compare head-on the old catalog and the one that will land soon. So what does the Japanese company’s subscription service really have in store for us? We’ve been talking about it for months, but the new PlayStation Plus – aka “Project Spartacus” – is only starting to take shape. The revised and corrected offer, scheduled for June 23, 2022 in Europe, is preparing to replace the PS Plus tandem | PS Now with a three-tier subscription service. The first, the “PS Plus Essential”, will give access to the same advantages as the current PS Plus. While the second (“Extra”) will also benefit froma catalog of PS4 games | PS5and more if you like for the third “Premium” stage, which adds oldies titles, remote software playback thanks to streaming and, icing on the cake, demos to test the latest triple-As.
Beyond offering a more muscular and clear service than in the past, Sony’s objective with this new PS Plus is to respond to the Game Pass. Microsoft’s offer continues to grow by welcoming, from the day of their release, exclusive blockbusters on Xbox and PC. On his side, PlayStation has always been very reluctant on the subject. Jim Ryan, head of the video game branch of the Japanese company, says that the cost of developing these titanic projects (“well over $100 million”) is not compatible with such a strategy, emphasizing the “care” and “respect” that must be applied to them. However, in the PS Plus Extra and Premium catalog, we notice Sony triple-As that are worth seeing.

Promises kept
Because yes, as promised last March, Sony has an effort to incorporate exclusives more or less recent in the Extra and Premium offers of PS Plus. On the PlayStation Blogwe can thus note the presence of Returnal (2021 | PS5) ; Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut (2021 | PS4 & PS5) ; Death Stranding Director’s Cut (2021 | PS4 & PS5) or even Demon’s Souls (2020 | PS5) Spider Man Miles Morales (2020 | PS4 & PS5). On the other hand, for this year’s blockbusters, access will be limited to the two-hour demos of the PS Plus Premium. This is for example the case for Uncharted Legacy of Thieves Collection et Horizon Forbidden Westreleased in 2022.
It is interesting to note that, for the time being, there is no mention of Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart – the star of the PS5 – and console exclusives Ghostwire Tokyo et Deathloop. But that’s normal. The list will be updated for the first time when the offer is rolled out for good. Above all, in the long term, this new PlayStation Plus will have new features “every month”. There will therefore be the games already offered at this same interval, as is currently the case, as well as the PS Plus Extra and Premium catalog which will expand as it goes along. When we have tackled the subject with Jim Ryan, the man was talking about “400 PS4 and PS5 apps at launch”. At the time of this writing, the list of PS Blog has only about sixty, to which are added the PSP, PS1, PS2 and PS3 titles of the Extra and Premium offers. In short, there is still room.

If PlayStation intends to enrich its new PS Plus with games of this caliber, it is certain, the offer will be worth the detour. Especially since this one is not 100% Sony. The firm can also rely on partners like Ubisoft which will offer around thirty apps through the Extra tiers | Premium, including Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Without forgetting other cartridges like the excellent Red Dead Redemption IIalready passed through the columns of PlayStation Now, in the same way as software rewarded like Outer Wilds et Celeste. In recent months, Sony had demonstrated its desire to improve the catalog of its services, adding for example Shadow Warrior 3 as soon as it is released in the service dedicated to streaming. PlayStation seems set to continue on this path. Ubisoft already plans to add another 20 games by the end of the year.
