After scoring their first goal in their World Cup history, Canada ended up losing 4 – 1 against Croatia on Sunday. Having lost their first game against Belgium, the men’s team does not have enough points to advance to the knockout phase of the FIFA tournament.
A historic goal
The captain Alphonso Davies scored the historic goal just 67 seconds into the game. Davies’ teammates surrounded the 22-year-old from Edmonton, and Canadian fans celebrated all over the world.
Croatia, ranked 12th in the world and runners-up in the tournament in 2018, scored four goals in the game, eliminating Canada.
I am disappointed with the result. It was not easy
said Alphonso Davies. We did our best, we fought the whole game. We look forward to the next game and hope to get some points.
Despite the elimination, Canada will play its last game of the tournament in Qatar on Thursday against the Morocco, ranked 22nd. Canada has participated in the FIFA World Cup only once, in Mexico in 1986.
