27.1% increase in travel receipts in January – 2024-03-30 01:40:26

The January 2024 travel balance did show a noticeable increase, reaching a surplus of €112.6 million, compared to the €54.6 million surplus recorded in January 2023.

This is an encouraging development for Greek tourism, signaling a dynamic start to the new year.

In particular, an increase of 27.1% was recorded in January 2024 by travel receipts, which amounted to 278.3 million euros, compared to 219.0 million euros in the corresponding month of 2023, while an increase of 0.7% was also observed in travel payments (January 2024: €165.7 million, January 2023: €164.4 million).

The increase in travel receipts was driven by both a 16.0% rise in inbound travel traffic and a 9.7% increase in average spend per trip. Net receipts from the provision of travel services offset the goods balance deficit by 4.2% and contributed 25.8% to total net receipts from services.

Travel receipts

In January 2024, as mentioned above, travel receipts increased by 27.1% compared to the corresponding month of 2023. More specifically, receipts from residents of the countries of the EU-27, which amounted to 149.0 million euros, while receipts from residents of countries outside the EU-27 increased by 1.0% (January 2024: 126.5 million euros, January 2023: 125.2 million euros).

The rise in receipts from residents of the EU-27 countries was the result of a 49.6% increase in receipts from residents of the euro area countries (January 2024: €115.5 million, January 2023: €77.2 million). euros), as well as the increase in receipts from residents of EU-27 countries outside the euro zone by 138.8%, to 33.5 million euros.

In particular, with regard to the most important countries of origin of travelers from the euro area, receipts from Germany increased by 34.7% to €29.0 million, while receipts from France increased by 83.0% to €29.0 million to 20.0 million euros. From countries outside the EU-27, receipts from the United Kingdom rose by 8.1% to €20.0 million, as well as receipts from the USA, which increased by 63.6% and amounted to 23.1 million euros. Finally, there were no collections from Russia.

Inbound travel traffic

Inbound travel traffic in January 2024 amounted to 737.3 thousand travelers, increased by 16.0% compared to the corresponding month of 2023.

In particular, travel traffic through airports increased by 11.7% compared to January 2023 and that through road border stations by 24.8%. The increase in inbound travel came from both the rise in travel from EU-27 countries by 24.9% and from non-EU-27 countries by 8.3%.

In more detail, according to iefimerida, travel traffic from the countries of the euro zone amounted to 254.7 thousand travelers, increased by 21.2%, while travel traffic from the EU-27 countries outside the zone also showed an increase of the euro by 34.4%, to 112.8 thousand travelers.

In particular, travel traffic from Germany increased by 8.6% and reached 70.2 thousand travelers, while that from France increased by 35.4% and reached 42.6 thousand travelers. In relation to countries outside the EU-27, travel traffic from the United Kingdom decreased by 39.2% and amounted to 36.2 thousand travelers, while that from the USA amounted to 54.6 thousand travelers, increased by 260 .2%. Finally, there was no travel traffic from Russia.
