In the UK, deaths linked to pregabalin, a commonly prescribed anti-anxiety medication, have more than doubled in the past five years. The independent French magazine Prescribe judges for its part that the prescription of this medication from the antiepileptic family, commonly used against generalized anxiety disorders and pain of nervous origin, is sometimes ” unjustified » and that its adverse effect profile « weighs heavily in the benefit-risk balance ».
In 2022, in England and Wales, 441 deaths linked to pregabalin were recorded, compared to 187 in 2018, more than double. Recent press articles have presented these deaths as a sign of a “ American-style opioid epidemic » caused by a medication that “ destroyed lives »
Pay close attention to interactions
If the increase in deaths linked to this drug can partly be explained by that of prescriptions – increased from 5.5 million in 2016 to 8.4 million in 2022 in England –the analysis of these same deaths shows, in more than 90% of cases, the presence of other opioids (including methadone or morphine).
