a fake tweet and a wrong editorial

As the person in charge of managing the contents of the Opinion section of this medium, I assume responsibility for the editorial published on Sunday, June 11, entitled “A lost progressivism.” My mistake consisted of taking as authentic a tweet from the socialist leader Myriam Bregman that turned out to be false; what is now called afake news.

The truth is that I was not as rigorous as an editor should be when it comes to verifying a statement disseminated through a digital medium such as Twitter. We are in an age in which the hacks of accounts, misattributions and fake news on social media. That forces us to be cautious about any potentially controversial message from a public figure.

The error is compounded if the context is taken into account. Not only are we going through an election year and in which the words of the candidates acquire greater prominence in public opinion, but in the current scenario of ideological tensions between left, right and center there are sensitive issues that need to be addressed with maximum seriousness. The issue of private property is undoubtedly one of them, and it was precisely the one that originated our editorial last Sunday.

As our says Manual of principles, values and styles, the “editorial reflects the newspaper’s position on any issue, even those that are not expressly linked to the news that was published. The one who reasons and gives his opinion in the editorial is not a certain journalist, but the newspaper as an institution”.

In the case of the controversy associated with the false tweet, it was not reproduced in the digital or printed edition of the newspaper, which exempts other journalists from all responsibility. The message was circulating on the networks and, since it referred to the housing shortage through a statement that questioned private property, as editor of Opinion I considered it pertinent to include a critical editorial on the issue.

Credibility is the most important value of a journalistic medium. The voice has earned the trust of its readers day after day and for 119 years. The errors, which are human, must be recognized without further ado, and apologize for the case.

In addition to admitting the mistake, we have removed the text from our digital edition and have invited Myriam Bregman to present her opinion on the housing problem in Argentina.
