High blood pressure is a silent killer that leads to heart disease when poorly managed, but even minor lifestyle changes can stop this damage. In fact, evidence suggests that certain fruits may have a multifactorial role in lowering cholesterol, clearing the arteries, and lowering blood pressure. .
Pomegranate fruit offers a wealth of benefits due to the positive effect of antioxidants on inflammation, and the juice contains 3 times the antioxidants of green tea.
Many of these antioxidants come in the form of polyphenols, which are plant pigments that give the fruit its distinctive red color. Half a cup of pomegranate provides about 72 calories, 16 grams of carbohydrates and 3 grams of fiber.
Pomegranate also contains a large amount of folic acid, vitamin K and potassium, which directly affect the elasticity of arterial walls and make them useful in controlling blood pressure. Results Pomegranate juice reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure, regardless of the amount or duration of consumption, according to the British newspaper “express”.
In addition, an ACE inhibitor may be what allows pomegranate juice to lower blood pressure. It is found in blood pressure medications and works by reducing the activity of angiotensin, an enzyme made in the kidneys.
This observation led the researchers in the review to suggest that it might be wise to include pomegranate juice in a heart-healthy diet.
How long does pomegranate juice take to lower blood pressure?
There is no definite answer about how much time it takes for pomegranate juice to lower blood pressure and the effects vary from person to person. Some studies suggest that it may take several weeks for results to become noticeable, while others suggest that the change may be evident within days.
And the head of the American Heart Association’s Food Committee, who is in charge of the study, Penny Chris Etherton, points out that there are several ways in which arteries can benefit from pomegranate juice.
She pointed out that pomegranates are rich in dietary fiber and antioxidants, which are useful in reducing inflammation and promoting arterial health. Apart from lowering blood pressure, the juice may also reduce harmful cholesterol.
And in 2019, a review published in the Journal of Complementary Therapies in Medicine examined 17 clinical trials but found no significant effects on cholesterol.
Some research has also recorded a decrease in cholesterol ranging between 3 and 10% after pomegranate juice, however, which indicates that it may have a positive effect on fats, but as with all fruits, it is better to consume the fruit itself rather than drink the juice. .
Some people who take medications to lower blood pressure are also advised to consult their doctor before consuming pomegranate juice.
