A German Amazon reseller told a homebrew enthusiast that 2K Games had pulled the physical

A German Amazon reseller told a homebrew enthusiast that 2K Games had pulled the physical Civilization 7 cartridge for Nintendo Switch, citing “technical and security requirements,” notebookcheck-hu.com reported, after the strategy game became an entry point for hacking the Switch 2. The email, shared on Reddit by a user named MaruluVR, said the order could not be fulfilled because “the publisher revoked the physical version (game card).” The reseller offered either a boxed download-code edition that includes the current-generation upgrade, or a full refund and cancellation.

The recall landed the same week a user known as Gezine released CivSwitch, an exploit that gives user-level access to the Switch 2 through an unpatched Civilization 7 cartridge. Copies of the Switch version of the game began selling at inflated prices on eBay, and other Reddit users reported cancellations of orders for the sold-out title.

Why 2K Pulled the Cartridge When CivSwitch Went Public

It is not clear whether Nintendo asked 2K to restrict access to the physical edition, but the homebrew community believes the timing coincides too much with the exploit’s release to be random. Nintendo has moved against similar entry points before: the company previously blocked eShop users from downloading SmileBASIC 4, a program for the previous-generation system that served as a foothold for the ns2jb exploit on the Switch 2. That jailbreak breaks through a deeper layer of the console’s protection, letting hackers dump Switch 2 games and opening the door to piracy.

The homebrew community believes the coincidence is too tight to be accidental. The reseller, who likely did not know about the jailbreak, stood baffled by the recall.

How CivSwitch Turns a Multiplayer Chat into a Switch 2 Breach

The weak point is the game’s multiplayer chat, which allows custom JavaScript code to run. To reach user-level access, testers insert an unpatched Civilization 7 cartridge, then connect a pre-programmed Raspberry Pi Pico or Pico 2 to the handheld. The microcontroller acts as a USB keyboard and types in the code.

Even with its limits, CivSwitch lets testers probe the console’s vulnerabilities. Nintendo has not commented on CivSwitch, ns2jb, or the related discoveries. Still, its actions may limit the damage until a firmware update patches the security holes.

What the Switch 2 Jailbreak Has Already Unlocked

On the console itself, a user going by byizmysh showed the Switch 2 playing YouTube videos through VacuumTube, an open-source project based on the lightweight YouTube version built for TVs, Samsung Magazine reported. Others have claimed to duplicate game files such as The Duskbloods and Mario Kart World, which would allow playable ROM copies. Security researcher Sammy Hajhamid publicly demonstrated the vulnerability last week, not to break the console but to expose the flaw and its exploitation potential.

Where the Recall Leaves Switch Owners and 2K

For buyers, the practical effect is immediate: physical Switch copies of Civilization 7 are being cancelled at retail, with refunds or the download-code Switch 2 edition offered instead. For 2K, the recall removes the one commercially available cartridge that CivSwitch needs to function, at least until another unpatched entry point appears.
