Audacity, that’s it. And it almost paid off for 25-year-old David Joseph Dalesandro, who was just arrested by police in the US state of South Carolina. As CNN recounts, he had just attempted and pulled off one of the most inflated—or reckless—heists ever.

The young man is accused of having entered a grocery store and having committed an armed robbery there using a dummy weapon, created in the 1980s by Nintendo to accompany the game Duck Hunt. First released in Japan in 1984, this clay pigeon shooting game was later included in the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) launch pack. Released in October 1985 in North America then in August 1987 on this legendary home console, Duck Hunt is an absolute madeleine for those who were children at that time.

Before committing his misdeed, Dalesandro had taken care to repaint his fake weapon using a spray of black paint. It must be said that the accessory, known as NES Zapper, is gray and orange – at least in its western version. For the record, this optical pistol was first sold in an all-grey look, but Nintendo quickly added a bright color precisely to avoid any possible confusion with a real weapon.

A Vaujour

According to local authorities, the budding thug therefore entered the grocery store with a wig, a hood and a mask, but also and above all with the black NES Zapper on his belt. He then demanded that the cashier give him 300 dollars (about 280 euros). The latter complied, not having noticed that the weapon was not one – or simply not wishing to take a risk.

But the police officers quickly contacted quickly got their hands on the robber, whom they found in a nearby parking lot, still in possession of his Nintendo weapon. He was arrested and taken into custody, and his junk weapon was confiscated to serve as an exhibit.

Without this rather pitiful end, David Joseph Dalesandro could have entered the legend of bandits with dummy weapons, alongside, for example, Michel Vaujour. One day in 1979, the French king of theft and escape escaped from the prison of La Santé with a soap gun which he had previously blackened himself with shoe polish.
