The Covid could come and play spoilsport this summer. Several indicators show a slight recovery of this virus, which we thought was behind us. Few figures are available, Public Health France having changed its daily surveillance in July due to the “favorable epidemic context”.
But in its weekly bulletin, SOS Médecins still notes an 84% increase in medical acts for suspicion of Covid, compared to last week. This concerns all age groups but in particular those under 2 years old and 15-74 years old. Visits to the emergency room for this reason are also on the rise, notes the network: +34% among those aged 75 and over, +56% among those under 2 years old and +25% among 15-74 year olds. But this increase “remains moderate” tempers SOS Médecins, since this represents just under 1,000 emergency visits for suspicion of Covid last week, throughout France.
Summer context and new variant
This epidemic resumption is attributed to a new variant: EG.51, also called Eris, a sub-variant of Omicron which is essential in France. It has been classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as “to be continued”. But several other reasons explain the return of the virus. Already “the effectiveness of the vaccine, which wanes over time, and therefore protects less well”, described, in an interview at the Parisian epidemiologist, Mircea Sofonea. In response, the government is considering a new vaccination campaign for the most vulnerable, which will be organized in the fall, reveals the Parisian .
