An epidemic of meningococcal B, which can cause meningitis, is progressing in Alsace. The Grand-Est Regional Health Agency has reported six cases in young adults, reports France 3.

One person died.

The Grand-Est regional health agency (ARS) is on alert. Since November 3, 2022, six cases of invasive group B meningococcal infection have been detected in the Strasbourg conurbation: 5 people from the Strasbourg conurbation and one person from Colmar. One of the patients died, France 3 reported.

The last case was reported on January 9 by the ARS in a press release. He is a young man of 16 who lives in the Bas-Rhin. Like the other patients, he had to be hospitalized.

Vaccination recommended for people frequenting nightclubs

The epidemic was first detected in a nightclub in Strasbourg. The ARS recommends that the public and professionals frequenting nocturnal festive places in the city center of Strasbourg, such as nightclubs, to be vaccinated against meningococcal B. And this, in order to avoid the occurrence of serious forms of disease.

Because meningococci can cause very serious diseases such as meningitis or septicemia, specifies on its site the ARS Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Meningococcal bacteria are transmitted through the air or through saliva.

As of January 5, 2023, 151 people have received a first dose of vaccination at the international vaccination center of the new civil hospital in Strasbourg. To answer questions about this vaccination campaign, a toll-free number has been set up: 0 800 32 04 00.
