An international team of astronomers led by Harvard University in astrophysics, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy has spotted a sun-like star called Gaia BH1 orbiting a black hole, as part of a campaign to identify black hole companions lurking regular stars in a galaxy. The Milky Way has a mass of 10 solar masses.
“We’ve been searching for latent black holes for the past four years using a wide range of data sets, and our previous attempts yielded a variety of binary stars masquerading as black holes, but this was the first time that the research had come to fruition,” the scientists said.
The scientists relied on data from the European Space Agency (ESA) Gaia observatory, which aims to create a three-dimensional space catalog, and this mission spent nearly a decade measuring the appropriate locations, distances and movements of nearly a billion astronomical objects, such as stars. planets, comets, asteroids and galaxies, by tracking the motion of objects as they orbit around the center of the Milky Way (a technique known as astronomy).
