Kangana Ranaut, a staunch supporter of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), said her opponents’ claims were “disgraceful” and “baseless rumours”.
The issue of beef consumption is particularly sensitive in India as cows are considered sacred by Hindus, the country’s largest religious group.
Some BJP politicians have pushed for a ban on cattle slaughter.
Ranaut, an award-winning Bollywood star who has appeared in some of India’s highest-grossing films, hit back when an opposition politician previously claimed she had eaten beef.
The allegation is potentially damaging for the actress, who is seeking to make her official entry into politics in the coming weeks as a BJP candidate in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh.
Writing on X, formerly Twitter, the actress herself said: “I do not consume beef or any other type of red meat, it is a shame that completely baseless rumors are being spread about me, I have supported and promoted the yogic and ayurvedic lifestyle for decades now such tactics will not work to tarnish my image.
“My people know me and know that I am a proud Hindu and nothing can ever mislead them.”
Renaut, 37, signed her post with the phrase “Jai Shri Ram”, a declaration of Hindu faith.
