Abinader to criminals: “Let them surrender peacefully”

The president of the Republic, Luis Abinaderurged this Thursday those who “bring restlessness” to the population to surrender to the authorities peacefully because, otherwise, they will be wanted by law enforcement officials.

“I ask those who are acting in our neighborhoods, our sectors, bringing restlessness, that they surrender in a peaceful way because if they don’t (they do), they will be found wherever they are, “he said.

These statements by the president were made during the announcement of a joint operation by the National Police and the Armed Forces, to guarantee peace amid an increase in criminal acts in the country.

Likewise, Abinader’s request came days after the death of four alleged members of the criminal gang known as “The Minors” or “Chuky Bad” at the hands of members of the Central Directorate of Investigation (Dicrim) of the Police.

According to official reports, the deaths of Miguel Ángel Calderón, known as “Bombo” and was identified as the ringleader of the gang, Kelvin Santos de la Cruz, Yeral David Peralta and another still unknown person, occurred during an exchange of fire with members of the uniformed.

In addition, two men identified as Rafelín Perdomo and Francisco Alberto were injured in the raid.

Similarly, Abinader acknowledged an increase in reported cases of criminal acts and violence, noting that these have been adding up since the reopening of the economy during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“After situations such as the pandemic, which have forced a general confinement of the population, and then an opening after a year and a half of confinements and curfews, that has caused throughout the world, and in the Dominican Republican increase in assaults, robberies and criminal acts,” he said.
