Adalberto Ríos Szalay, photographer and anthropologist, dies

The photographer and anthropologist Adalberto Ríos Szalay died yesterday. Born in 1943 in Cuernavaca, the academic was a prominent figure in Morelos, as he dedicated himself to disseminating the cultural and natural heritage of that state.

He studied administration, but did a master’s degree in anthropology. He was a career professor at UNAM and a guest professor at the University of San Carlos in Guatemala.

He served as director of the Morelos Institute of Culture and coordinator of the six cultural institutes that make up the central zone of the country. He also collaborated in newspapers, magazines, radio and published nearly 50 books.

With his children he created the 3 Ríos Fund, which consists of an image bank for teaching, research and the dissemination of science and culture.

Ríos Szalay’s work has been recognized by UNESCO, the Hungarian Ministry of Culture, the Cuban Fund for Cultural Assets, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and he received an Honoris Causa Doctorate from his alma mater, the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos ( UAEM).
