The Nicaraguan and Venezuelan communities are urging President Joe Biden to use his executive power to protect “more than 700,000 families in Florida” through a new Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation.

A TPS redesignation would protect from deportations to Nicaraguans and Venezuelans who do not have immigration statussaid the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), the Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC), and the Venezuelan American Caucus.

Those organizations along with former congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel Powell and Doral City Councilwoman Maureen Porras, a Nicaraguan-American, will expand on the details of their petition Tuesday at a press conference.

Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of the United Statesannounced on July 11, 2022 the extension of the TPS designation for 18 months for Venezuelans and is in effect from September 10, 2022 to March 10, 2024.

For Nicaraguans, the DHS announced on June 13 that it extended also for 18 months from January 6, 2024 to July 5, 2025.

“The new extension allows approximately 4,000 current TPS holders to re-register to retain TPS through July 5, 2025,” DHS reported on that occasion.

The organizations indicated that the decision to extend TPS for those who already have this protection has left thousands of people “at the mercy of deportation” for the implementation of what they described as anti-immigrant agendas.

“A redesignation of TPS would protect Nicaraguans and Venezuelans who do not have a regulated immigration status from deportation,” they pointed out.

Immigrant rights groups argued that a new designation would provide Venezuelans and Nicaraguans already in the United States with stability for themselves and their families and also help the nation’s economic system.

“The political, social and humanitarian crisis that has existed in Venezuela for decades has deepened in recent years and has pushed thousands of Venezuelans to leave their homes to emigrate to other countries in search of peace, freedom, democracy and opportunities”, detailed.

Regarding Nicaragua, they indicated that “since March 2023 the world has recognized that crimes against humanity have happened and continue to happen since 2018.”

The organizations’ request is made “more than a month after the implementation of Florida’s anti-immigrant law and a letter sent by 26 senators to president Biden” asking that you reassign TPS to Venezuela and Nicaragua.

The TPS is a program created in 1990 through which the US government grants work permits and allows foreigners to remain legally in the country for a certain time when their nations are affected by war conflicts or natural disasters.
