The Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed that 10 teams will qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the continent’s largest representation in the tournament’s history. This exceeds the previous record of five teams in the 2022 edition, according to FIFA’s official qualification framework published in March 2024.
The 48-team format for the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, includes 10 slots allocated to African nations based on regional rankings. CAF’s technical director, Amadou Onana, stated in a press conference that the expansion reflects “the continent’s growing football infrastructure and competitive depth.”

Africa’s 54 member nations will compete in a revised qualifying process, with 54 teams vying for 10 spots. The qualification rounds, scheduled to begin in 2024, will follow a multi-stage format similar to previous cycles but with adjusted groupings to accommodate the increased number of participants. CAF’s president, Patrice Motsepe, highlighted the opportunity for “greater exposure and development for African football” in a statement released April 5.
FIFA’s 2026 tournament structure includes 12 groups of four teams, with the top two from each group advancing to the knockout stage. The expanded format, approved by FIFA’s executive committee in 2022, aims to increase global participation while maintaining competitive balance. Africa’s 10 teams will be distributed across the group stages, though specific matchups remain undetermined.
The achievement follows years of advocacy by African football bodies for increased representation. In 2021, CAF launched a development initiative targeting 100 million young players across the continent, a goal cited by officials as a contributing factor to the World Cup qualification milestone. However, no direct causal link has been documented between the initiative and the increased slots.
The next phase of the qualification process will see CAF finalize its competition calendar by June 2024. The first matches are expected to be held in September 2024, with the final round of qualifiers concluding in 2025. No official timeline has been released for the draw of the 2026 World Cup groups.
