O Google Maps finally started to release calls to all its users recently quick directions (glanceable directions)a feature that had been announced in February 2023 and was scheduled for launch in June last year.

The release was noticed first by the staff of Android Police, which verified the appearance of the feature on multiple smartphones in more than one country. With quick directions, the user can view information about their route directly from the device’s locked screen — thus avoiding the need to unlock their smartphone to check the progress of the trip.

The feature can also be seen on the route overview screen on Maps — that is, before even tapping “Start” to begin a trip. Furthermore, route information is updated in real time, allowing the user to know where to go even before starting a journey.

This new feature can be very useful for times when you, for example, just want to check the location of an establishment in a region you already know, and not start a new complete trip on the app.

When it announced the news, Google promised that quick directions would support Live Activities (Live Activities) of iOS. This integration, however, is not yet present in the latest version of Maps. In February last year, the company said that the new feature would be compatible with traveling on foot, by bicycle and by car.

Finally, be aware that quick directions are turned off by default. To activate them, simply open Maps, tap your profile photo (in the top right corner of the screen) and go to Settings » Navigation. As the new feature is being released gradually, it is possible that it will not appear to everyone at this first moment.
