The Al-Azhar International Center for Electronic Fatwa responded to the criticisms of the late imam, Sheikh Muhammad Metwally Al-Shaarawi, after the statements of the Minister of Culture, in which she considered Sheikh Shaarawi, “has many reservations.”
Al-Azhar emphasized that the imam of the preachers, Sheikh Al-Shaarawi, is an example of the enlightened moderate scholar.
Al-Azhar published the fatwa, through its account on the social networking site “Facebook”, the biography of the imam of preachers, Sheikh Al-Shaarawi, as it came as follows:
His Eminence Sheikh Muhammad Metwally Al-Shaarawi was born on April 15, 1911, in the village of Daqadous, Mit Ghamr Center, Dakahlia Governorate, in the Arab Republic of Egypt.
He completed memorizing the Noble Qur’an at the age of eleven, and obtained the Azhar primary certificate in 1923 AD. He entered the Al-Azhar secondary institute, and his interest in poetry and literature increased.
– After obtaining Al-Azhar secondary school, his father insisted that he complete his studies at Al-Azhar, and indeed he graduated from the Faculty of Arabic Language in 1940 AD.
– Imam Al-Shaarawi chose to complete his studies in Arabic language; To be his door to all legal sciences, in addition to what the sheikh enjoyed in terms of mastery in the arts of the Arabic language and its faculties, such as grammar, morphology, beautiful poetry, rhetoric, tongue fluency, and clarity of statement.
– Indeed, the Arabic language and its faculties were a way to interpret the Holy Qur’an, contemplate its verses, and communicate its meanings to the Muslim masses in an easy, clear and interesting way. Until the imam became the imam of the preachers and a milestone in the era of the modern Islamic call, and people began to wait for his weekly talks in front of the television screens, and through the broadcast of the Holy Qur’an, and their consciences were linked to his hadith and his thoughts about the book of God Almighty.
– The sheikh has honorable national stances against the occupation forces, and successful efforts in refuting suspicions about Islam, the Qur’an, and our master, the Messenger of God, and providing rational and logical responses to them through media and field meetings with various segments of society, especially the youth.
– In every place the sheikh passed through or a position he held, he had great benefit and influence in it, in Egypt and abroad, and one of his most famous positions was sending a telegram to King Saud bin Abdulaziz Al Saud during his stay in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia objecting to the transfer of the shrine of our master Ibrahim, peace be upon him, to expand it the end around the honorable Kaaba; Supporting his opinion with legal evidence that this is not permissible.
– King Saud, may God have mercy on him, responded to the Sheikh’s speech, endorsed his opinion, prevented moving the shrine from its place, consulted him on some matters of expanding the Holy Mosque of Mecca, and took his advice.
– One of the most prominent positions through which Sheikh Al-Shaarawi served the Islamic Call was the position of Director of the Office of His Eminence Grand Imam Hassan Mamoun, the former Sheikh of Al-Azhar in 1964 AD, Head of the Al-Azhar Al-Sharif mission in Algeria in 1966 AD, and Minister of Awqaf and Al-Azhar Affairs in the Arab Republic of Egypt in 1976 AD, and he also held membership in the Islamic Research Academy 1980 AD The Arabic Language Academy, and the Shura Council of the Arab Republic of Egypt, 1980 AD.
– In addition to the many positions that were offered to him and he apologized for them; Devoted to knowledge, advocacy, and serving the needy.
– The imam of preachers, Sheikh Muhammad Metwally Al-Shaarawi, is an example of the enlightened moderate scholar.
– Sheikh Al-Shaarawi has many scientific books, including: The Miracle of the Qur’an – Physical Evidence for the Existence of God – You Ask and Islam Answers – Islam and Contemporary Thought – Contemporary Issues – Critical Questions and Explicit Answers.
After a long life in the realm of the enlightened and tolerant Islamic call, and in the service of Islam and Muslims, the Sheikh passed away at the age of eighty-seven, on Safar 22, 1419 AH, corresponding to June 17, 1998 CE.
And Dr. Abbas Shoman, the former representative of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, said that those who attack Sheikh Al-Shaarawi, like children, wanted to destroy the fruits of a high palm tree, so their stones fell over their heads, and the fruits continued to admire the onlookers and purely for the eaters.
Representative Farida Al-Shobashi, a member of the House of Representatives, submitted a request for a briefing to Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister, and Dr. Nevin Al-Kilani, Minister of Culture, regarding the poor performance of the Ministry of Culture in spreading awareness in the means of awareness, and asked how the National Theater of the Ministry of Culture produces a play about Sheikh Al-Shaarawi. Dr. Nevin Al-Kilani, Minister of Culture, denied the embodiment of the biography of Sheikh Muhammad Metwally Al-Shaarawi on the national stage during the coming month of Ramadan, considering that Sheikh Shaarawi “has many reservations.”
Al-Kilani added, during a telephone interview with the “Cairo Talk” program, that there was a proposal submitted to hold evenings about some religious figures in Ramadan, and that this is not a theatrical work, explaining that this proposal was submitted by the director of the National Theater, and it was not presented to the committee until now. As the committee decides the works according to some criteria and conditions.
