After the “Wollekes”, a bonus for alternatives to heaters in Brussels

A year after the distribution of Wollekes, these blankets provided by the City of Brussels to Horeca as an alternative to heaters now banned, the results are positive among the traders concerned. The City is also launching a bonus intended for the purchase of alternatives to terrace heaters.

On the initiative of Brussels Minister of the Environment Alain Maron, outdoor heating was banned in Brussels from December 2022, with the aim of combating energy waste. To help with this transition, the City of Brussels then distributed nearly 700 throws, resulting from upcycling, to 40 Brussels hospitality establishments.

“We received the Wollekes last year, and our customers used them willingly,” explained Kaffa Bar manager Marc Daniels on Thursday. “I am convinced that investing in this type of alternative is a good idea. These blankets are appreciated by customers and allow us to have limited energy costs,” he continued.

“Being ecological as well as logical and pragmatic, providing alternatives and incentives without penalizing economic players, such is the spirit of the ‘Wollekes’ and the City to support Horeca in transitioning to a more sustainable economy”, said enthused Brussels Commerce alderman Fabian Maingain. A second phase of distribution of throws will soon take place, announced Brussels Climate Alderman, Benoit Hellings.

After this test, the City of Brussels also validated on Thursday the creation of a bonus allowing Horeca establishments to partially finance other alternatives to heaters. The bonus applies to all purchases from January 1, 2023, with retroactive effect, and amounts to €400 to €600 maximum, depending on the terrace (less than or greater than 50m2). Textile alternatives are 100% financed, and textile alternatives requiring additional energy are capped at 50% of the purchase price.
