On World Water Day, the makers of the Green Code planted saplings on the banks of the Kondoros River. This is the start of planting 10,000 trees! program’s spring period. Through the continuation of Civaqua and the tree planting program, watercourses will form a blue ring around Debrecen, along which natural green corridors will form. All this increases the diversity of the living world, improves the city’s climate and the quality of life of the people of Debrecen.

The creators of the Green Code started planting the first tree seedlings of the year along the Kondoros River. With this, we started planting 10,000 trees on World Water Day! continuation of the program this year, as well as the creation of a green corridor along the watercourse.

More than 9,500 trees have already been planted throughout the city, and in the spring the city’s natural environment will be enriched with another 600 trees, and with this we will start planting another 10,000 trees! program in accordance with the Green Code. In addition, in the continuation of the Civaqua program, the Kondoros-vær receives the water of the Tisza together with the surrounding watercourses and lakes, forming a blue ring around Debrecen with green corridors.

– We create areas that improve the climatic conditions of the people living in the area, the air quality will be better for the people living here, and we can provide them with a better quality of life.

We would like Debrecen to be a happy city, and in this it is very important that, in addition to economic development, environmental protection is given sufficient weight, the two go hand in hand – said deputy mayor Ákos Balázs.

The new trees along the Kondoros River will help to retain water in the coastal area. Here, they have already started to create a green corridor with a rich biodiversity using methods close to nature.

– It was mowed less often and we also sowed a flowery, wildflower seed mixture, thanks to which plants developed flowers that insects, butterflies and pollinators liked – emphasized Orsolya Hamecz, co-editor of the Green Code.

The Kondoros River is one of the key elements of the natural environment of the eastern part of the city, which is why the creation of a green corridor along the living water is particularly important here.

– An incredible value, and something that the residents here expect from us to keep and preserve. Both investments, whether the Civaqua program or the second phase of the 10,000 trees to Debrecen, serve this purpose, they confirm that this was, will be and will remain a garden city zone – pointed out municipal representative Szabolcs Komolay.

Through the green corridors and the Civaqua water supply, habitats are formed along the waters around Debrecen that increase the diversity of the city’s flora and fauna.

All of this together can significantly restore the city to its former natural environment.

– It is very important to connect green corridors and green areas, and there are now very significant opportunities for the restoration and development of these green areas in the coming period – said Lengyel Szabolcs, head of the biodiversity topic group of the Green Code.

With the elements of the Green Code and green programs covering the entire city, they want to make Debrecen the Green Capital of Europe in 2027.
