According to the CNE union, a wrap theft led to the dismissal of an Aldi store employee on Wednesday. “The employee took it from the shelf and then went to the canteen to eat it. She was distracted, she intended to pay him next. She didn’t hide to eat it, she was with a colleague, ”explains Patricia David, CNE delegate for the 71 stores (including that of Tamines) depending on the management of Gembloux. “In 1 hour, his fate was sealed,” adds Stanny Hermans, CNE national permanent. “When I think that it took a year and a half to dismiss a former Aldi manager for sexual harassment (who had accumulated 14 complaints from employees against him), it shocks me! »

We contacted the management of the Aldi headquarters in Gembloux, which oversees this store in Tamines, but it was ultimately the spokesperson for Aldi Belgium, Dieter Snoeck, who called us back. “That’s right, an Aldi employee in Tamines has been fired. She stole and she confessed this act. As the work regulations provide, theft is a serious fault. In case of theft, it is dismissal.

It does not specify the nature of the theft. We insist. “I don’t know the details of the flight,” he said. Was she fired for stealing a $2.79 wrap? Or, do we blame him for a more important theft? Stealing a wrap is obviously not the same thing as stealing, for example (we invent), €100,000 from the store’s safe! Dieter Snoeck inquires, then he calls us back a few minutes later. “A theft is a theft and we cannot allow a theft. I have nothing else to say,” he said, without going into more detail.

The trade unionist Patricia David does not agree when the management concludes with the confessions of the person concerned. “She admitted not having paid for the wrap, but she intended to do so. She had eaten one (the packaging was found in the trash) and another had remained wrapped”.

” You imagine ? She loses her job when in principle she was not even supposed to come to work that day. She was on a sickness certificate but, in order not to embarrass her colleagues, she did not present it, ”adds the delegate (who however did not see this certificate). “The poor employee, 12 years old, was in tears…”

Work stoppage in Amay

This incident was in addition to another disciplinary incident that occurred the day before (Tuesday) at the Aldi in Amay (near Huy). There, an employee was sanctioned with a 3-day layoff because she herself pointed to her cash register for her own shopping, while the regulations prohibit it. “The sanction is understandable but where the workers are angry, it is because his colleague, who nevertheless told him not to do this, was also sanctioned! “. According to the Aldi spokesperson, she received a reprimand. According to the CNE, a day of layoff.

The incidents in Amay and Tamines angered the unions, who immediately boycotted the works council which took place on Thursday for the 71 stores dependent on the Gembloux plant. They also caused the closure of Amay’s store. “The workers have gone off work and this could spread,” warns Stanny Hermans.

This Thursday, the 8,000 workers received a letter from Aldi Belgium announcing that they would not be affected by Aldi’s poor figures recorded in Germany and France. But with what is happening at Delhaize (and which no one saw coming), the CNE is not completely reassured…
