Up to the B juniors, Afamefuna spent his youth in the imperial city near Alemannia. He was finally drawn to Borussia Mönchengladbach for the U17s before going to the USA after the A youth team. Not only did he earn a Bachelor of Arts in college, he also played soccer with the Virginia Cavaliers at the University of Virginia. He narrowly lost on penalties in the final of the 2020 national college championship, and the now 26-year-old also captained the team for two years.

With Benjamin Hemcke (on loan from Viktoria Köln until 2024, editor’s note), Franko Uzelac, Marcel Johnen, Vleron Statovci, Julian Schwermann, Frederic Baum, Lars Oeßwein, Bastian Müller (Wuppertaler SV), Robin Afamefuna (RW Koblenz) and Sasa (Strujic) has ten professionals under contract with Alemannia for the 2023/2024 season.

Following four years of college football, he was one of a handful of foreign players in the MLS SuperDraft to be selected as the 37th second-round pick by the Colorado Rapids. After graduating from college and playing in the MLS, the top soccer league in the USA, he returned to Germany – first to Bonner SC, where he made 35 appearances last season.

After Bonn’s relegation, he moved to the Regionalliga Südwest to Rot-Weiss Koblenz, where he was appointed team captain after six months. In Koblenz he has played in 23 games so far and scored two of his own goals.

“I’m very happy to return to my home country and to regularly see familiar faces in and around the club. The goals of the club overlap a lot with my personal goals, which is why I didn’t have to think long about moving to Alemannia. I want to go with them I will do everything I can to achieve these goals with my commitment on and off the pitch, to help lead the club back to where it belongs,” says Afamefuna, full of anticipation.
