Health authorities in Cartagena launch an alert for a fruit called manzanillo de la muerte that grows widely in the Playa Blanca resort (Barú island) and the Los Corales urbanization.

It is a green fruit that looks like a small apple and tastes like an apple, but it is actually toxic, it causes burns in the esophagus and respiratory distress, it can cause digestive bleeding and even lead the patient to death.

Two tourists who went to the Clínica de Blas de Lezo hospital, following consuming this fruit, were discharged in the last hours and are recovering from the effects caused by the consumption of this toxic fruit.

“The result of the consumption of manzanilla de la muerte in the couple from Spain was a burning sensation in the area of ​​the mouth, pharynx, and epigastrium, following a sensation of obstruction of the respiratory tract and difficulty breathing,” explained Álvaro Cruz, CRUE director.

Another case was that of a young man with abdominal pain who was under observation for several days.
Last year a group of Cartagena residents who ate the attractive fruit in the Los Corales urbanization also entered the emergency room.

El Dadis goes further and does not recommend sheltering from the rain under this tree. According to the health authority, the water that comes into contact with the fruit can be harmful to the skin.
