Alex Michelsen Talks Career Progress, Staying with Coach Kristof Vliegen in Brussels

American tennis player Alex Michelsen reflected on a breakthrough season—highlighted by his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the US Open—following his elimination from the tournament, during which he opted to lodge at the home of Kristof Vliegen, located just ten minutes from the venue.

Reflecting on a Breakthrough Major Campaign

At just 22 years old, Michelsen reached his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal this past summer on home soil at the US Open. Assessing his year on the ATP Tour, the American acknowledged the significance of his recent strides while maintaining a pragmatic perspective on his near-misses against elite competition.

“I think that this year marked a turning point in my career, even though I should have reached the last four,” Michelsen explained, as reported by outlets including lavenir.net. “But overall, I feel really good about the level of play I’ve reached.”

Comparing his current standing to past benchmarks, Michelsen noted clear technical and mental advancement. “If I compare it to January or, for example, to the one I had here in the corresponding week last year, I feel that I have progressed and that I am playing better and better. This year, I am losing to a lot of top 10 players, which is a good thing. That means I am gaining experience and, one day, I will end up turning the tide.”

Brussels Sightseeing and Coaching Dynamics

During his campaign at the European Open in Belgium, Michelsen bypassed traditional tournament hotels. Instead, he spent the week staying ten minutes away from the stadium at the residence of his coach, Kristof Vliegen.

“I went to see the fountain with the little boy who pees,” Michelsen smiled, referencing Brussels’ iconic Manneken Pis. “And I’m probably going to eat a waffle this Friday night or tomorrow, because now that I’m done with the tournament, I’ll be able to enjoy myself a little bit. I can’t wait!”

The professional partnership between Michelsen and Vliegen has now spanned a full year, yielding measurable dividends on and off the court. “He’s an excellent coach,” Michelsen said. “In addition to sleeping at his place, I was also able to train in his club, which allowed me to feel more at home because I am quite far from home anyway. He’s a wonderful person. He helps me on the court, but also off it, in all sorts of areas that don’t just concern tennis. But, at the end of the day, he is my tennis coach and he does a heck of a good job.”
