Polling stations are closing in West Virginia

The chance for West Virginia voters to cast a vote in Tuesday’s primary came and went as polling stations closed at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Voters will weigh the primaries for the state’s two congressional districts, as well as other state and local races. One of the most-watched races is between Republican Representatives David McKinley and Alex Mooney, competing in West Virginia’s redrawn District 2.

The race will test whether endorsement of former President Donald Trump will see Mooney win. McKinley has defied Trump, voting in favor of President Joe Biden’s $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill and creating a House committee to investigate the Jan. 6 riot.

Rep. Carol Miller, representing District 1, is expected to retain her seat against four Republican challengers.

As a measure of potential enthusiasm, 58,684 early in-person voters cast their ballots, the West Virginia Secretary of State WCHS said. There were 68,391 early ballots cast compared to the same period in the 2018 primary.

As of Monday, May 9, there were 3,897 postal voters.

The results will be published as soon as they are available.
