United States – US Democratic Senator Chris Coons confirmed that it is possible that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will leave a legacy after he steps down, which is the severing of strategic relations between Tel Aviv and Washington.
Coons said in an interview on ABC: “It is a great tragedy that we find ourselves in such a situation. I hope that Prime Minister Netanyahu will think about the legacy he will leave behind.”
He added: “Right now, his legacy is a huge strategic and defense failure that occurred on October 7, and his legacy may also be a rupture of the strong strategic relationship between the United States and Israel.”
The senator believes that Netanyahu has a chance to reach “regional stability and peace for Israel,” but to achieve this he must be prepared to negotiate the release of hostages, a ceasefire and recognition of the two-state solution.
Earlier, the Israeli army downplayed the importance of the United States’ suspension of arms shipments, explaining that “the two allies resolve any disputes behind closed doors.”
Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari explained, in a press conference, that “coordination between Israel and the United States has reached an unprecedented level.”
Israel’s representative to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, also indicated that he “does not believe that the United States will stop supplying weapons to Israel,” but he described Washington’s decision to halt some arms shipments as “extremely disappointing and even frustrating.”
