Anaïs, a young mother, almost died and had to have several limbs amputated after contracting influenza A in March 2023.

Anaïs, a young 35-year-old mother, had several limbs amputated after contracting influenza A.

HAS France 3 Grand Est, her husband Davy recounts the ordeal that the family has been experiencing since March 6, 2023, when Anaïs, then a caregiver at Altkirch hospital (Haut-Rhin), fell ill. At first, the doctor thought it was a simple flu. But the thirty-year-old’s condition will quickly deteriorate in the days that follow. Davy will then start to worry.

One day, “Anaïs feels tired and goes to bed at 8:30 p.m., before getting up 50 minutes later. When she wakes up, she feels really bad and wants to sleep on the sofa. I am alerted by this approach. I go look for his things in the bedroom and then see a bloodstain.” says her husband.

The latter contacted the 15th and described Anaïs’ symptoms: “Vomiting blood, difficulty breathing with heavy breathing, chest pain and a fever reacting to doliprane.” The SAMU regulator tells Davy to go and consult “the general practitioner on duty at Altkirch hospital”. On site, the practitioner detects an abnormally low level of oxygen saturation. The young woman was then transferred to Mulhouse hospital.

Multiple limb amputee

Anaïs does not have a simple flu but influenza A and is in critical condition. Gradually, the mother’s functions deteriorated, requiring the amputation of several of her limbs: the phalanges of the left hand, part of the right foot and the left leg, just below the knee.

Anaïs is alive but the young woman and her husband Davy must now completely rebuild their lives. Unable to carry out his work in Switzerland and the care of his wife, the latter lost his job and will be made redundant at the end of November.
