«We are running to win the European elections». Elly Schlein is not satisfied with the minimum survival threshold of 20% and relaunches in view of the race for Strasbourg. But to win you need votes and to have votes you need the right candidates but they aren’t there yet. A series of discussions are underway in recent days. About ten days ago at the Nazareno a meeting took place between the secretary, Marco Furfaro, Igor Taruffi, Riccardo Righi, Marta Bonafoni, Francesco Boccia and Flavio Alivernini.
During the meeting the possible candidacy of Gino Cecchettin was discussed. A name that has been “frozen” for now and the feeling is that the more time passes, the less concrete the possibility becomes that Giulia’s father could be included in the list; also because he, through his lawyer, has denied it on several occasions. But let’s go in order. Cecilia Strada should find a place in the north-east constituency together with Stefano Bonaccini, but among the names there would also be the former MP Giuditta Pini (close to Matteo Orfini) and the current MEP Elisabetta Gualmini. But not only. Annalisa Corrado, Alessandro Zan and Alessandra Moretti would also be in the running. In the north-west constituency there should be the mayor of Bergamo, close to Bonaccini, Giorgio Gori. Irene Tinagli, Enrico Letta, Emanuele Fiano and the Milan councilor Pierfrancesco Maran will also try. We cannot exclude the commitment of Andrea Orlando, who for some time has been taking care of Liguria, the territory in which he was elected. In the centre, however, the clash should take place between the mayor of Florence Dario Nardella, Bonaccini area, and Nicola Zingaretti, Schlein side. However, the mayor of Pesaro Matteo Ricci, the former director of Avvenire Marco Tarquinio, who has also been asked by the 5 Star Movement to be willing to run, and Alessia Morani, who has never held back criticism of the dem leader, could also run in this constituency. .

In the south the name that is now certain is that of the former Rai journalist Lucia Annunziata (she should be the first name on the list), there are still doubts about the candidacy of Sandro Ruotolo, he has put himself forward, but among the big names there should also be the dem group leader at Senate Francesco Boccia, Pina Picierno and the mayor of Bari Antonio Decaro. There could also be room for Raffaele, known as Lello, Topo, a man close to the Campania governor Vincenzo De Luca.
In the islands for now the only name being mentioned is that of Lampedusa’s hero doctor and outgoing MEP, Pietro Bartolo. Emma Bonino could also be added to these names if the “United States of Europe” project were to fail. It is clear that Schlein will do so, even if he hasn’t made it official yet, his direct commitment to the list is almost taken for granted. There are two main reasons. The first: the dem leader challenged Meloni right on the European Championships pitch and a step backwards would be a sensational own goal. The second: if the Democratic Party managed to obtain a good result in the elections, its shaky position at the helm of the Nazarene could be strengthened. So it remains to be understood whether he will run in just one constituency or in all and above all whether he will do so by placing himself at the top of the list or will prefer to place himself in second or third place. The fact is that if he decides to run as the top seed he would end up blocking the way for other Dem candidates. Then there is the whole internal question of who will take over as wingman. There is no doubt that being close to the secretary could bring more votes than expected.
