Animal Welfare Center in Barranquilla: Transforming the Lives of Stray Animals in the Caribbean

2023-07-20 01:42:45

Barranquilla has inaugurated the Animal Welfare Center (CBA), the first care center for stray animals in the Caribbean, which represents a first step for other administrations in the region to join animal protection. With an investment of close to 4,000 million pesos, this 3,100-square-meter facility is located in the township of Juan Mina, on road 11 #4-413 and is already operating for the public.

The delivery of the CBA was made on June 24 when this adequate space was presented to the community to provide medical-veterinary care, protection and temporary care to vulnerable canines, felines and equines in the District of Barranquilla: with the objective that they have optimal health conditions.

The place has veterinary offices, waiting areas, 170 kennel areas, another 60 crates for cats, mangers for horses and additional spaces that will allow simultaneous care for up to 700 animals, as well as administrative offices and a hospitalization area.

Among the procedures that can be performed are: surgeries, maternity care, deworming, sterilization, vaccination, among other services.

One of the most outstanding characteristics of the CBA is the service of four animal patrols, two of which are dedicated to providing emergency veterinary care and the other two are used to carry out sterilization days for canines and felines of mixed breed and/or Creole. .

These patrols will be in charge of responding to emergency reports and carrying out sterilization campaigns in different communities.

The hours for emergency care range from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, being previously reported. On the other hand, the sterilization days are carried out by summoning the users from 7:30 am at the point previously informed in the schedule.

In the case of sterilizations, only mixed breed and/or Creole canines and cats are between 4 months and 8 years old, in optimal health conditions, without being overweight. For the procedure you must have a minimum fast of 8 hours of food and 4 hours of liquid. In the case of females, they may not be in heat or in a state of pregnancy.

Operation details

The CBA will function as a place of transit that will allow the attention and recovery required by the animals that enter, while promoting adoption, so it will not operate as a temporary home, permanent hospital or shelter.

In this sense, the reception of the cases that are attended will be those that are reported and directed to the emergency unit that will go to the point to provide the medical service and, as appropriate, will be transferred to the CBA.

Once the recovery of the animal is complete, it will enter the adoption program (if it does not previously have an owner and/or caretaker), within the framework of the district campaign ‘Adopt is Save’. For this, a web platform will be implemented so that those citizens interested in adopting a recovered animal can apply and carry out the process in a simple way and, if approved, offer a second chance at life to these sentient beings within a home.

The following animals are cared for at the CBA

That require medical-veterinary attention and are in a condition of vulnerability.

All of the above in the jurisdiction of the Special, Industrial and Port District of Barranquilla.

The attention will be provided temporarily so that other animals in the conditions mentioned above that require medical-veterinary attention can also access the services.

What services are provided to animals?

It is important to bear in mind that these services will only be provided to those animals that are admitted to the Animal Welfare Center, due to their vulnerable health condition.
