Quito.-Another mayor was shot dead in Ecuador, within the framework of the “internal armed conflict” declared by President Daniel Noboa, against organized crime gangs, the main causes, according to authorities, of the wave of violence that the country is experiencing.

The victim is José Sánchez, mayor of the Camilo Ponce Enríquez municipality, located in the southern Andean province of Azuay, as confirmed by the provincial prefect, Juan Cristóbal Lloret Valdivieso, through social networks.

“Between sobs and helplessness, municipal officials have just confirmed the cold-blooded murder of fellow canton mayor Camilo Ponce Enríquez,” Lloret Valdivieso announced.

“We express our deep regret to his family, friends and his worthy and noble people who elected him, while we demand that the authorities find those responsible for this new crime that is mourning Azuay and Ecuador,” he added.
