Anthropic’s AI Assistant Claude Integrates into Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides

Anthropic Deploys Claude Inside Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides in Public Beta

Anthropic has integrated its AI assistant, Claude, directly into Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides as a public beta, allowing paid users to edit documents via a sidebar without copying text back and forth.

How Claude Operates Inside Google Workspace Files

The integration installs via the Google Workspace Marketplace and places Claude in a sidebar across Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Users on paid plans can execute instructions without leaving their documents. Memeburn reported that Claude can restructure documents, write formulas, build charts, and generate presentation slides matching an existing theme. An “Ask before edits” setting pauses for user approval before changes land, while an “Accept all edits” mode executes instructions from start to finish. In spreadsheets, Claude cleans data, builds pivot tables, and adds new tabs. In presentations, it generates new slides and flags overlapping elements or text running outside margins.

Pricing Math and the Workspace Assistant Contrast

For teams already paying for Claude Pro, Max, or Team, the sidebar integration is a zero-cost extra feature. For Workspace administrators, however, it represents a second assistant that costs more than the software suite itself. Google previously folded Gemini into Business Standard and Enterprise plans. Based on pricing data outlined by Memeburn, a Workspace Business Standard seat costs about $14 per user per month on annual billing and includes Gemini. Adding a Claude Team standard seat at $20 a month raises the per-user bill to $34, roughly 2.4 times the base suite cost. Meanwhile, Business Starter plans priced at $7 per month do not include Gemini in documents at all, requiring teams to weigh a $7 upgrade to Standard against a $20 Claude subscription.

Setup (Annual Billing) Cost Per User / Month AI Assistant in Docs, Sheets, and Slides
Workspace Business Starter $7 None
Business Starter + Claude Team Standard Seat $27 Claude
Workspace Business Standard $14 Gemini
Workspace Business Standard + Claude Team Standard Seat $34 Gemini and Claude

Current Limitations and Enterprise Data Retention

Anthropic’s documentation outlines distinct functional gaps during the public beta. Claude cannot read or resolve comments in Google Docs, process suggested edits, or access other files in a user’s Drive. Single operations time out after six minutes, and charts inserted into Slides appear as static images rather than linked objects. Zero data retention is not available during the beta, but content is kept for 30 days under standard retention policies, and user inputs are not used for model training.

Multi-Suite Expansion and Google’s Stake

Rather than building a competing office suite, Anthropic positions Claude inside whichever ecosystem customers already use. Google retains its default position with Gemini in Standard and Plus seats and holds a major financial investment in Anthropic, preserving its economic stake even as subscribers utilize rival models inside Google Docs.
