Apple CarPlay gains SharePlay function; the new generation will come later

2023-06-26 18:30:00

Apple had presented, a year ago, the future generation of its system Apple CarPlay as part of Apple’s WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference). The next generation CarPlay system was to support a much larger portion of your vehicle’s functions rather than just mirroring your smart phone.

While the WWDC 2023 conference recently came to an end, it looks like we’ll have to wait until later this year for any details on the next-gen Apple CarPlay, but the company still announced that they’ve added an interesting feature, the compatibility with Apple SharePlay.

This addition will share your music and playlists with all passengers. If you have CarPlay running with Apple Music as your media player, other people using an iPhone in the car will now be able to join your session through SharePlay and add songs to the queue. waiting. Your iPhone phone should automatically send you a notification if this option is available. It will therefore no longer be necessary to connect the phone in the car to obtain the musical selections of all the passengers. Everyone will be able to introduce others to their musical preferences in a new, much simpler and more intuitive system.

Apple was stingy with details, however, but the interface can be seen to allow people to play, pause, skip a song, rewind, and reorder the song queue. Details on which music apps this feature will be available for in the future have not been released, but Apple has demonstrated this with Apple Music; so we assume this will be the only compatible app at launch.

Launched in 2014, CarPlay lets you mirror a simplified version of iOS to your car’s infotainment system. Despite resistance from several automakers, they have, in most cases, caved in and decided to add compatibility over the years.

RPM’s review

While several manufacturers are thinking of regaining control of their infotainment system, we wonder if some will decide to drop Apple CarPlay, especially since the new generation claims to want to control everything on board.
